Quinn gives the album a five-star rating, describing it as “one of the year’s most beautiful and moving discs”.
The album features music by Ergodos dierctors Garrett Sholdice and Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, as well as Irish composers Simon O’Connor and Jonathan Nangle, composed in response to J.S. Bach’s organ prelude ‘Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ’ (BWV639).
“I Call to You … is characteristically intelligent, inquisitive and full of altogether beguiling sounds. With Baroque sensibilities left intact, the overall tone here is contemplative and quietly celebratory.”
He continues, praising the “intense reciprocity between [the] quintet of five outstanding soloists” of Ergodos Musicians – vocalist Michelle O’Rourke, clarinettist Jonathan Sage, violinist Clíodhna Ryan, cellist William Butt and pianist Michael McHale. He describes their performances as “performances that match the understatement of the music with rapturous sensitivity and precision”.
