Left Behind, a beautiful, transcendent music project marking the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising, will tour Ireland in April and May 2016.
Written by composer and curator Simon O’Connor, and commissioned and presented by vocalist Michelle O’Rourke, Left Behind: Songs of the 1916 Widows is a new collection of songs which draw on the experiences of the wives of prominent rebel leaders in the 1916 Rising. O’Rourke and O’Connor have created a unique suite of compositions that offer an emotional, human perspective on a narrative that is too often told in baldly male heroic terms.
Left Behind was recently presented as part of Ireland2016’s state commemorations on International Women’s Day. The performance was attended by President Michael D. Higgins, and Tánaiste Joan Burton. It received a standing ovation, and was described as “magnificent” in The Irish Times. Left Behind was also presented at RTÉ Reflecting the Rising events on Easter Monday.
Left Behind will tour in Ireland and abroad in 2016. Irish tour dates include: Limerick (31 March), Letterkenny (1 April), Tralee (7 April), Ennis (22 April), Portlaoise (28 April), Dún Laoghaire (6 May), and Navan (11 May). A commercial recording on the Ergodos label will launch on 26 April. On 27 April Michelle O’Rourke will perform the songs with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and narrator Olwen Fouéré in the National Dublin Concert, Dublin. All current tour dates are listed here.
