Formed from intricately interlocking melodies that are constantly subject to subtle variations, A new sea is a composition for violin and cello by Benedict Schlepper-Connolly. The music is ever-flowing, and yet as if frozen or suspended in mid-air.
Written for and recorded by the transatlantic pairing of violinist Yuki Numata Resnick (who performs regularly with bands Beirut and The National) and Kate Ellis (Artistic Director of Crash Ensemble), A new sea takes two threads of striking individual colour and weaves them to form a delicately beautiful fabric.
Schlepper-Connolly describes the influence of a nineteenth-century children’s book on the work:
“In Richard Jefferies’ Bevis, the young adventurer sets out to expand his own miniature universe, and goes in search of – and finds – a new sea. In writing this piece of music, I thought of this story again, and how our seas and oceans are under increasing threat while we search our solar system for new ones.”
Recorded and mixed in Ergodos’ Dublin studio and mastered in Vienna by Christoph Stickel (Deutsche Grammophon, ECM), this is a striking collaboration between two leading instrumentalists and of one of Ireland’s most individual composers.
Benedict Schlepper-Connolly is a composer and producer from Dublin. As a composer, he moves between various musical forms, including chamber music, choral writing, orchestral work, arrangement, songwriting, field recording and music for dance and film. Benedict’s compositions frequently seek out an ecstatic quality, with a reduced palette of materials, rich tonal harmonies and rhythmic intricacy. He is a founding director of Ergodos and is Digital Curator at MoLI – Museum of Literature Ireland. benedict.ie
